The error bars are the standard deviations over the simulations and measure both the eeect of the limited volume sampled by IRAS and the eeect of shot noise in the IRAS sampling. Note, however, that the data points are correlated due to smoothing. ABSTRACT We recover the one-point probability distribution function of the initial density uctuations (IPDF) from the quasi-linear galaxy density eld of the 1.2 Jy IRAS redshift survey smoothed by 10 h 1 Mpc. The recovery, using the laminar, Eulerian, Zel'dovich approximation of Nusser and Dekel, is independent of and is relatively insensitive to linear galaxy biasing in the range 0:5 b 2. Errors due to discrete sampling, the limited survey volume, and the method of recovering the IPDF are evaluated by comparing the IPDF determined from the IRAS data with Monte-Carlo IRAS-like catalogs \observed" from N-body simulations of CDM models with Gaussian initial conditions. Eight sensitive statistical tests used in this comparison nd the IRAS IPDF to be consistent with Gaussian. We provide observational constraints on possible deviations from Gaussianity, which should be obeyed by any theoretical model.

Redshift Distortions and Omega in Iras Surveys

Redshift space distortions on large scales can be used to measure the linear growth rate parameter f ≈ Ω0.6/b. I report here measurements of such distortions in the IRAS 2 Jy, 1.2 Jy, and QDOT redshift surveys, finding f = 0.69 −.19 from a merged QDOT plus 1.2 Jy catalogue. Unfortunately, confidence in this result is undermined by a marked (4σ) change in the pattern of clustering in QDOT beyond...

Genus Statistics of the Virgo N-body simulations and the 1.2-Jy Redshift Survey

We study the topology of the Virgo N-body simulations and compare it to the 1.2-Jy redshift survey of IRAS galaxies by means of the genus statistic. Four highresolution simulations of variants of the CDM cosmology are considered: a flat standard model (SCDM), a variant of it with more large-scale power ( τCDM), and two low density universes, one open (OCDM, Ω0 = 0.3) and one flat (ΛCDM, Ω0 = 0....

We present the redshift data for a survey of galaxies selected from the data base of the Infrared Astronomical Satellite (IRAS). This survey extends the 1.936 Jy sample of Strauss et al. (1992a) from a ux limit of 1.936 Jy at 60 m to 1.2 Jy. The survey extension consists of 3920 sources in the ux interval 1.2 { 1.936 Jy, of which 2663 are galaxies with measured redshifts. Fourteen objects (0.52...

Power correlations in cosmology : limits on primordial non - Gaussian density fields

We probe the statistical nature of the primordial density field by measuring correlations between the power in adjacent Fourier modes. For certain types of non-Gaussian field, these k-space correlations would be expected to be more extended than for a Gaussian field, providing a useful discriminatory test for Gaussian fields. We apply this test to the combined QDOT and 1.2-Jy IRAS galaxy survey...

Cosmological parameters from cluster abundances , CMB and IRAS

We combine information on cosmological parameters from cluster abundances, CMB primor-dial anisotropies and the IRAS 1.2 Jy galaxy redshift survey. We take as free parameters the present values of the total matter density of the universe, Ω m , the Hubble parameter, h, the linear theory rms fluctuations in the matter density within 8h −1 Mpc spheres, σ 8 , and the IRAS biasing factor, b IRAS. W...
